Each year, over 250 children under the age of 5, drown in swimming pools. Nationally, drowning is the leading cause of death for children under the age of 5. In addition, on average, 3000 children sustained injuires requiring emergency treatment.
Bellow are reminder safety tips for parents and caregivers of children at any age.
»Supervise children at all times around pools and spas. Adults should keep a constant eye on all kids in the water. Emphasize the need for constant supervision to babysitters. Even momemtary distractions, like phone calls, using the restroom or someone at the door can provide enough time for a child to access the pool and quietly slip under water.
»Install a four-sided barrier, such as a fence with self-closing gates completely surrounding the pool. If the house forms the fourth side of the barrier, install alarms on doors leading to the pool area to prevent children from wandering into the pool or spa. Also install safety covers and perimeter or in-water alarms as additional layers of protection.
»Learn to Swim and teach your children to swim. .
»Get training in basic water rescue skills, first aid and CPR.
»Have rescue and first aid equipment, and a phone to call 911 readily available at the pool.
»Learn about the hazard of drain entrapment and what to look for in your pool or spa.
